Hookah Anyone?

     By Keisha A. Mitchell

As another weekend approaches, many in the country find themselves weighing the usual late night options to take their mind off a long week of work or school. If like many, you find the usual club hopping routine mundane and monotonous; look no further than the eastern world to partake in a new and exciting nightlife experience. The Hookah Bar has quickly gained popularity across the country within the last decade and now, multiple bars dedicated to the pastime have popped up in virtually every major city in the United States.
What is Hookah you ask?  An experience to say the least.
Originating in India almost a millennia ago, “hookah”  (an Arab word meaning small box) is the term for the apparatus used to smoke flavored tobacco through a flexible pipe while the tobacco is heated by water held in the hookas’ base. The infusion of fruity tobaccos and water vapor make for a very innocent albeit, distinct buzz.
After the introduction of tobacco by Europeans to the ancient world, hookah soon became a highly coveted sport by the ancient elite.  However, in modern times the act of “hookah”-ing is now used to bring family and friends together in a setting that is both sensual and sociable.
In Atlanta, Georgia, Café Istanbul is all the buzz providing customers with an authentic Turkish environment as well as an authentic Middle Eastern menu. The spacious dining area is complimented by a dance floor that is center stage for the main attraction at Café Istanbul; its’ Belly dancers.  The curvaceous dancers come out nightly to entice and engage customers.  Hookah here runs about $12 a flavor (the hookah base is included in this price) and the food runs on the moderate side averaging between $12 and $17 a meal.  Don’t let the pricing deter you though, Café Istanbul was awarded with both culinary and nightlife recognition in both 2007 and 2008. Once visited, Café Istanbul is an experience one wont soon forgets.
Hookah Bars provide out goers with an excitingly new and culturally expansive experience, both of which are enough to make any participant feel worldly and satisfied. So, the next time you cant think f anything to do, or rather are just looking for an escape from the norm, find a Hookah Bar nearest you and enjoy the atmosphere.
