Janelle Monae- Metropolis (Suite I)

   By Keisha A. Mitchell

The Alien girl from Kansas City, Kansas sprinted through her chosen institution of higher education; The American Musical Academy, before crash landing in Atlanta, GA at Atlanta Metropolitan College where she was discovered by none other than Big Boi from iconic southern group Outkast. Taking the fledgling singer under his wing, Monae gained industry exposure for her prolific writing skills, and uncanny performance capability.  With cameos in Idlewild, and prior independent recordings creating a buzz, Monae began to explore more of her musical expansiveness and founded the Wonderland Arts Society. Signed by Diddy in late 2007, the artist released what was, and is still pending as a 4 disc release. The first suite is full of allegory, imagery and out of this world production, and Ms. Monaes’ vocals play no second fiddle to the albums overall awesomeness.  From the single “Many Moons” to the Judy Garland-esque  “Smile”, Monae definitely proves a formidable and infectious force in the industry to be reckoned with.
